AI and Technology News – part 3

Movements in the safety, security, and legal space related to AI.

Microsoft has taken legal responsibility for code generated by their GitHub Copilot product to address concerns about potential copyright issues. This move is aimed at reassuring users and reflects Microsoft’s leadership in AI among tech giants.

AI is being exploited for unethical purposes, with companies using AI to facilitate academic cheating, such as essay writing services. These services advertise on platforms like TikTok and Meta, despite being illegal in several countries. AI is used to reduce plagiarism in these essays, akin to how calculators were introduced in education to assist with complex math.

Several major tech companies, including Adobe, IBM, and Nvidia, have pledged to develop safe and trustworthy AI, as conveyed to the White House. Google has committed $20 million to its responsible AI fund, focusing on research, policy discussions, and efforts to combat AI misuse. Both Google and Meta are taking steps to identify and prevent AI from being used for malicious purposes, especially in the context of political ads and deepfakes.

Amazon now requires authors to disclose the use of AI when publishing Kindle books, responding to concerns about AI-generated content. The move aligns with growing support for transparency in AI applications across various media.

AI’s water usage, an often overlooked resource, is significant in training AI systems. Tech giants like Microsoft and Google are consuming substantial amounts of water to cool their data centers, highlighting the need for more sustainable AI technology as demand for high-performance AI models continues to rise.

Three stories.

A student from MIT is using AI to design buildings with reduced concrete usage, addressing environmental concerns associated with concrete production, which contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions.

AI technology, specifically the Optellum Virtual Nodule Clinic software, is aiding doctors in identifying deadly cancers more effectively than human doctors. This software, trained on extensive CT scan datasets, promises earlier cancer detection and fewer costly follow-up scans.

A Russian IT giant, Yandex, has developed a new large language model known as Yandex GPT, which reportedly demonstrates higher potential than GPT-4. While details are limited, it’s a notable development in the global AI race, showcasing Russia’s presence alongside tech giants from the US and China.
